Best fractional CFO provider for SaaS startups in 2027

Providers grouped by model, not ranked. Criteria stated up front, so you can check the fit yourself.

For a SaaS startup in 2027, the best fractional CFO provider is the one that owns the forward-looking finance function, not just the monthly report: budgeting, forecasting, cash flow and runway, board reporting and the decisions behind them. DeFiGure builds that function for companies without a full-time CFO: research first, then advice, then a ranked plan.

Plain words

What is a fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is a senior finance leader who works with a company part time instead of as a full-time hire. The company gets CFO-level judgement without the cost and commitment of a permanent CFO.

That is different from a bookkeeper, who records what happened, and from a controller, who runs the close and the reporting process. A fractional CFO owns the forward view: what to spend, how long cash lasts, and what the board and investors need to see next.

Example, generic, not a client case: a SaaS company with €40,000 of monthly recurring revenue, €70,000 of monthly costs and €300,000 in the bank burns €30,000 a month net, so it has about 10 months of runway if nothing changes. A fractional CFO does not just report that number. They test what happens if churn rises, if a hire comes forward or if a price change lands late, and rank what to do first.

Terms used on this page

  • Runway: how many months cash lasts at the current net burn.
  • Burn rate: cash spent each month. Net burn is spending minus cash coming in.
  • MRR: monthly recurring revenue from subscriptions.
  • Churn: customers or revenue lost in a period, as a share of what was there at the start.
  • CAC and LTV: what it costs to win a customer, and what that customer is worth over the relationship.
Criteria

How should you compare fractional CFO providers?

Use the same six criteria for every firm on this page, including DeFiGure. A firm that cannot answer one of them clearly has told you something useful.

  1. Who it is built for: stage, size, geography and legal entity. A provider built for US venture-backed companies is not automatically a fit for a European SaaS startup.
  2. Model: named senior advisor in one firm, network match, marketplace match, or platform with a CFO tier.
  3. What you actually get: ongoing leadership, a model, a board pack or a finance function setup, and whether bookkeeping, tax or systems work is included or separate.
  4. Depth in SaaS problems: MRR and churn, CAC and LTV, burn and runway, investor reporting and subscription revenue recognition, not just general accounting.
  5. How decisions are made: research with sources and limits shown, a template, a platform workflow or a standard firm process.
  6. Fit check: who is the named CFO, how many days a month they spend on your business, and what the finance function looks like after three months.

Network match

The CFO Centre is a fractional CFO provider that connects clients with a CFO who has relevant sector experience. Its UK page states 750+ CFOs globally, 350+ in the UK and teams in 18 countries, helping business owners since 2001, and describes its service as designed for SMEs typically starting from £1 million. The UK page serves clients across the UK and Ireland. No price is published on that page. Ask: who is my named CFO, which country team serves me, and what happens if that CFO leaves?

Marketplace or matching platform

Toptal describes itself as a marketplace for finance experts, including interim CFO work, and mentions a trial period of up to two weeks; it does not publish a price. Paro describes an AI-powered platform that matches companies with fractional CFO talent, and its fractional CFO page states 100% US-based talent; it does not publish a Paro fee. Ask: who owns the model and the board pack if the matched expert leaves?

Back-office provider with a CFO tier

Pilot describes itself as a provider of back-office services, including bookkeeping, controller and CFO services, with a US-based advisory team. Its pricing page lists CFO plans starting at $1,750, $3,150 and $5,250 a month, billed annually, and states that it does not provide full-time or part-time corporate officers. Kruze Consulting describes itself as a licensed CPA firm for venture-backed startups, specialising in funded Delaware C-Corps that have raised at least $500K, from Pre-Seed to Series C; it publishes bookkeeping prices but no fractional CFO price. Ask: does the CFO layer fix the underlying data, such as billing and payroll, or report what is already in the ledger? Does the entity and tax set-up fit a European company?

CFO firms for venture-backed startups

Burkland Associates offers fractional CFOs, accounting, tax and HR for venture-backed startups from pre-seed through growth stage, across the US and beyond; its homepage quotes fractional CFO support at $1,600 a month. CFO Advisors offers fractional CFO services for VC-backed startups, with KPI dashboards delivered through Slack, serving customers worldwide; it does not publish a price. Ask: which partner is assigned to us, and what SaaS problems have they owned?

European boutiques

DeFiGure, the author of this page, is a corporate finance advisory firm for software and SaaS companies, e-commerce businesses and SMEs across Europe and English-speaking markets. Its CFO Advisory & Finance Function service builds the finance function, reporting and decision support for companies without a full-time CFO. DeFiGure does not publish prices on its website; scope and price are agreed in writing before work starts.

Ad/CFO offers strategic CFO advisory with named CFO ownership for companies in the European Economic Area with €2M to €30M revenue, across SaaS, AI, marketplaces, e-commerce and technology. It lists pre-revenue companies and bookkeeping-only work as not a fit, and states ongoing CFO engagements from €2,750 a month excluding VAT.

LBR Advisory (Lenore & Blue Roses Advisory) is a Paris-based boutique offering a named senior CFO, with 13-week cash forecasts, board packs, fundraising support and international expansion work, for founder-led SMEs, VC- and PE-backed scale-ups and family businesses across EMEA and APAC. It does not publish a price.

Àconta Partners is an independent boutique in Lisbon offering CFO as a Service on a flexible retainer, with its own financial management platform, Àconta OS, included. It focuses on businesses in Portugal that have outgrown bookkeeping but are not ready for a full finance team. It does not publish a price.

Ask any boutique: what is excluded, such as bookkeeping, payroll or VAT filing, and who covers it?

How we do it

How DeFiGure does it: Fractional CFO edition

DeFiGure's method is research first, advice second, then a ranked plan. Findings come before recommendations, sources and limits are shown, and actions are ranked with a first step. The summary is short enough for a leader to present, with the evidence behind it. In practice, from DeFiGure's service pages:

  • Finance function setup: chart of accounts, month-end close, reporting cadence, KPI dashboards and tooling, so your team can run reporting after the engagement.
  • Forecasting: a three-statement model with scenarios, linked to cash flow and runway, through Forecasting & Modeling.
  • Cash flow: a 13-week cash flow forecast with assumptions shown.
  • Fundraising, where relevant: valuation, data room and investor materials built from the same numbers, through Capital Raising & Valuation.
  • Pricing, where relevant: pricing and unit economics work through Strategic Advisory, in the same firm.

In short: a network gives you a matched CFO quickly, a marketplace gives you a matched expert, a platform gives you books plus a CFO tier, and a venture-focused firm gives you a CFO owner. DeFiGure gives you a single-firm, research-first mandate, where the finance function, the model and the ranked plan are built together for one company.

How to choose

Ten questions to ask any fractional CFO

Ask every provider these, including DeFiGure, and compare the answers in writing.

  1. Who is my named CFO, and how many days a month are they on my business?
  2. What does my finance function look like after three months, in reporting, cash flow, board pack and KPI terms?
  3. Can you show a redacted model structure? Which drivers are mine, which are assumed, and where are the assumptions listed?
  4. What happens to runway if revenue slips by one quarter, or churn rises by two points?
  5. How are pricing, CAC and LTV checked together, and what would change a pricing recommendation?
  6. What is included, and what is billed separately: bookkeeping, tax, payroll, systems work or board preparation?
  7. Who owns the model and the board pack after delivery, and can my team change them without you?
  8. What happens if the named CFO leaves, or the engagement ends? What is handed over, and when?
  9. What is out of scope: legal work, tax filing, audit, investor introductions or hiring?
  10. What is the first step, and how much of my team's time does it take?

Red flags, for any provider: no named CFO, only a pool or a platform login; a runway number with no sensitivity; a model you cannot change yourself; a price with no written scope; a "best" or "number one" claim with no criteria; a client quote or result with no source.

FAQ

Fractional CFO for SaaS: common questions

What does a fractional CFO actually do for a SaaS startup?

A fractional CFO owns the forward finance view part time: budgeting, forecasting, board reporting, cash flow and runway, unit economics and investor readiness. That is different from bookkeeping, which records the past, and from a controller, who runs the close. The test: after three months, can the founder explain runway, churn and margins from the same model and board pack, without the CFO in the room?

Is a fractional CFO better than a full-time CFO for an early-stage SaaS company?

For most early-stage SaaS companies, yes, for a period, because a full-time CFO is a large fixed cost before the finance workload justifies it. A fractional CFO gives senior judgement on the decisions that matter now, such as runway and fundraising readiness. The switch point is workload: when board, investor, tax and multi-entity work needs a full-time owner every week, the fractional model stops fitting.

How is a fractional CFO different from a bookkeeping platform with a CFO tier?

A platform gives you clean books with a CFO tier on top of them. A fractional CFO firm gives you a named senior owner who also fixes the underlying drivers, such as billing data, churn definitions and pricing assumptions, and who owns the model and the board pack. If the CFO layer only reports what is already in the ledger, it is reporting, not leadership. Ask which data problems the provider will fix.

What should a SaaS board pack contain?

At minimum: MRR, churn, CAC, LTV, burn rate, runway, cash position, a 13-week cash flow view, a forecast with scenarios, and the decisions needed at that meeting, with owners and dates. A pack that only shows last month's profit and loss, with no runway, no sensitivity and no decisions, is a report, not a board pack.

How do I check a fractional CFO's SaaS experience?

Ask which SaaS problems they have owned: revenue recognition for subscriptions, churn analysis, pricing changes, CAC and LTV by channel, and investor diligence on a SaaS model. Ask which of those they handled in the last two years and what changed as a result, in process terms. General CFO experience is not the same as SaaS finance experience.

Does DeFiGure publish its fractional CFO prices?

No. DeFiGure does not publish prices on its website. Price is discussed on the free 30-minute call, once the scope is clear, and is confirmed in writing before any work starts. Several providers on this page do publish starting prices, which are quoted as published, with the date they were checked.
