Best financial modelling service for SaaS startups in 2027

Small providers grouped by model, not ranked. Criteria stated up front, so you can check the fit yourself.

For a SaaS startup in 2027, the best financial modelling service is the one that builds a linked model from your own revenue, churn and cost drivers, with scenarios and a runway view you can defend in diligence, not a generic template with your logo on it. DeFiGure builds that model research first, then advice, then a ranked plan.

Plain words

What is a SaaS financial model?

A SaaS financial model is a spreadsheet, or a tool, that turns the drivers a software company controls, such as new customers, prices, churn and hiring dates, into a monthly forecast of revenue, costs, cash and runway. A good one links profit, cash and the balance sheet, so one change flows through every number.

At its centre is the recurring revenue waterfall: starting MRR, plus new and expansion revenue, minus churned and contraction revenue. The rest of the model hangs off it: hiring, costs, cash and the scenarios investors will test.

Example, generic, not a client case: a SaaS company starts the month with €50,000 of MRR, wins €6,000 of new MRR and €1,500 of expansion, and loses €2,000 to churn and €500 to downgrades. It ends the month at €55,000. A model shows what that pace means for cash and runway over 24 months, and what happens if churn doubles or the next sales hire starts two months late.

Terms used on this page

  • Three-statement model: profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow, linked so one change flows through all three.
  • MRR and ARR: monthly and annual recurring revenue from subscriptions.
  • Churn: customers or revenue lost in a period, as a share of what was there at the start.
  • Runway: how many months cash lasts at the current net burn.
  • Sensitivity and scenario analysis: changing one input at a time to find what matters, then changing several together to describe one possible future.
Criteria

How should you compare financial modelling services?

Use the same six criteria for every firm on this page, including DeFiGure. A firm that cannot answer one of them clearly has told you something useful.

  1. Who it is built for: stage, size and geography. A model built for a US Series A raise is not automatically right for a European seed round or a grant application.
  2. Model: one modeller, a small boutique, a finance firm that also runs the model each month, or a template or tool you fill in yourself.
  3. What you actually get: a full three-statement model or a P&L and cash forecast only, scenarios or a single case, documentation, a walkthrough, and revisions.
  4. Depth in SaaS problems: MRR waterfall, cohorts and churn, CAC payback and LTV, annual prepayments and deferred revenue, and hiring at fully loaded cost.
  5. How decisions are made: drivers from your own data with sources and limits shown, or assumptions copied from a template.
  6. Ownership: can you open, change and update the model yourself in Excel or Google Sheets after delivery, or does it live inside someone else's platform?

Founder-led modelling studios

SaaS Financial Model, whose founding partner is Kevin Wong, sells one fixed package, "The Essentials": a custom operating model for seed to Series A startups, with a bottom-up ARR waterfall, hiring plan, P&L and cash forecast, delivered in under two weeks. The page states that a full balance sheet is deliberately left out.

Hemrock, formerly Foresight, is Taylor Davidson's practice. It publishes open-source model templates, including a SaaS forecasting tool, and builds custom models for businesses and funds. Its custom page says most projects take a few weeks, with "no team and no handoffs".

Finro Financial Consulting is led by its founder, Lior Ronen, who is based in Frankfurt. It builds driver-based models for tech startups from pre-seed through Series B, with base, upside and downside scenarios, and also reviews existing models, with a review delivered in five business days.

Ask any founder-led studio: what happens to my model if the one person who built it is unavailable, and can my team update it without them?

Small European modelling boutiques

DeFiGure, the author of this page, is a corporate finance advisory firm for software and SaaS companies, e-commerce businesses and SMEs across Europe and English-speaking markets. Its Forecasting & Modeling service builds linked three-statement models, cash flow and runway projections, scenarios and budgets from a company's own drivers. Scope is agreed in writing before work starts.

Consult EFC is a London practice run by Kish Patel, an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. It builds SaaS financial models, or reviews existing ones before a fundraise, for UK SaaS founders from Seed to Series B. Scope is agreed per engagement.

The Oakworth, also in London, builds three-statement models, cap tables, valuations and data rooms for SaaS and enterprise software startups, with ARR, NRR and LTV/CAC on its SaaS page. It states that an initial working model is delivered within two to three weeks.

ModelPro is a company registered in England and Wales that sells model templates and bespoke builds for startups and scale-ups, with SaaS one of several sectors, and offers ongoing support after delivery.

Waveup is a London fundraising and growth advisory that says it has a team of 25 across Europe. It custom-builds models and says it never uses templates. Its SaaS or marketplace model includes cohort revenue and LTV/CAC, delivered in two to three weeks with a 60-minute walkthrough.

Ask any boutique: who builds the model, which drivers come from my own data and which are assumed, and is the balance sheet included?

SaaS finance firms that also run the model

Fiscallion is a fully remote fractional CFO and FP&A firm for B2B SaaS that says it is located in Serbia. It offers a one-time driver-based three-statement model build, delivered in 6 to 10 weeks, and ongoing FP&A or fractional CFO support for companies that want the model kept running. Its model service page is aimed at B2B SaaS companies between $5M and $50M ARR.

Standard Ledger is an Australian accounting firm that works only with startups. It offers a custom three-way forecast built in Modano, a modelling software, plus monthly model upkeep and CFO advice.

Ask: if I stop the retainer, do I keep a model I can open and change in my own Excel or Google Sheets?

Templates and tools with a done-for-you option

ProjectionHub sells CPA-developed projection templates, including five templates in its SaaS category, which it describes as suited to pre-seed, seed and Series A raises. Its team will also prepare projections or build a custom model, stating turnaround as fast as two business days and one to two weeks for complex models.

Sturppy is financial modelling software for early-stage startups: founders can build the model themselves, or have its team build one in about a week. The model is built on the Sturppy platform and can be shared by live link or exported in full as a CSV file.

Brixx, from Guernsey, is web forecasting software with pre-built templates that produces linked P&L, balance sheet and cash flow forecasts, with a seven-day trial.

Ask yourself: who will enter and defend the assumptions? A tool calculates; it does not decide which churn rate is realistic.

How we do it

How DeFiGure does it: Financial modelling edition

DeFiGure's method is research first, advice second, then a ranked plan. Findings come before recommendations, sources and limits are shown, and actions are ranked with a first step. In practice, from DeFiGure's Forecasting & Modeling page:

  • Your drivers first: the model starts from accounting exports, bank balances, the sales pipeline and payout reports. Where data is thin, public benchmarks are used and the source and its limits are written next to the assumption.
  • Linked statements: monthly profit, cash and balance sheet, built around the MRR waterfall and the hiring plan. Read how to forecast SaaS revenue bottom-up.
  • Sensitivity, then scenarios: find the few inputs that move cash most, then build base, upside and downside cases around them. Read scenario and sensitivity analysis explained.
  • Cash and runway: a monthly forecast for 12 to 24 months, with a 13-week cash flow forecast when cash is tight.
  • Hand-over: a walkthrough so your team can update the model without us, and a short summary a founder can present to a board or investors.
How to choose

Ten questions to ask any modelling service

Ask every provider these, including DeFiGure, and compare the answers in writing.

  1. Can you show a redacted model structure, not just a screenshot of the dashboard?
  2. Which drivers come from my own data, which are assumed, and where is each assumption listed with its source?
  3. Is the model a full three-statement model, or a P&L and cash forecast only?
  4. How are new, expansion, churned and contraction MRR modelled, and by which customer segment?
  5. How are annual prepayments, deferred revenue and payment terms handled in cash?
  6. What happens to runway if revenue slips by one quarter, or churn rises by two points?
  7. How many revision rounds are included, and how are changes handled after delivery?
  8. Who owns the model, and can my team open and change it in Excel or Google Sheets without you?
  9. Is the scope fixed in writing, and what is out of scope: valuation, investor presentation, data room or monthly updates?
  10. How long will it take, and how much of my team's time does it need?

Red flags, for any provider: a model you cannot open or change yourself; assumptions with no source; a single case with no scenarios; a runway number with no sensitivity; work with no written scope; a "best" or "number one" claim with no criteria; a client result with no source.

FAQ

SaaS financial models: common questions

What should a SaaS financial model include?

At minimum: an MRR or ARR waterfall built from new, expansion, churned and contraction revenue; a hiring plan at fully loaded cost; a monthly P&L; a cash forecast with runway; and base, upside and downside scenarios. For a raise, add a linked balance sheet, so annual prepayments and deferred revenue explain why cash and revenue differ, plus the SaaS metrics investors check, such as CAC payback and net revenue retention.

Template or custom model: which is better for a seed-stage SaaS startup?

A template is enough when the business model is simple, the founder has time to fill it in, and the main question is the size of the first raise. A custom model is worth it when revenue has several drivers, such as sales-led and product-led at once, when cash timing matters, or when investors will run diligence on the model. Either way, the founder must be able to explain every assumption.

How long does it take to build a SaaS financial model?

Stated turnaround times on this page range from as fast as two business days for projections built on a template, and about a week for a tool-based build, through under two weeks to two or three weeks for small studios and boutiques, to six to ten weeks for a full driver-based build by a SaaS finance firm. The founder's own data is usually the bottleneck: clean MRR history, a hiring plan and the bank balance shorten any build.

Does a seed-stage SaaS model need a balance sheet?

Not always. One provider on this page states that it leaves the full balance sheet out of its early-stage build by design, and a P&L plus cash forecast can be enough for a first raise. A linked balance sheet becomes important when annual prepayments, deferred revenue, debt or inventory make cash and profit move apart, or when investors want to test working capital in diligence.
