Best behavioural strategy consultancy for SMEs in 2027
Small specialists grouped by model, not ranked. Criteria stated up front, so you can check the fit yourself.
For an SME in 2027, the best behavioural strategy consultancy is the one that changes a specific decision, such as a bonus scheme, a renewal offer or a price rise, and measures the change against a baseline, not one that only explains biases in general. DeFiGure applies its B.R.A.I.N. framework to incentives, pricing and customer loyalty.
What is behavioural strategy consulting?
Behavioural strategy uses behavioural economics, the study of how people actually decide, to design the choices inside a business: pay and bonuses, pricing and renewals, customer loyalty and leadership decisions. People feel losses more than equal gains, stick with whatever option is pre-selected and react to how a choice is worded. Those patterns are predictable, so they can be planned for.
The useful kind for an SME is small and measurable: one decision, a baseline, one or two changes, and a comparison afterwards. Large programmes with research teams suit large companies with large samples.
Example, generic, not a client case: say 20 of every 100 new customers choose the annual plan today. That is the baseline. Make the annual plan the pre-selected option and show what the monthly plan costs over a year, run it for one group of new customers, and compare the share that chooses annual with the baseline. The offer stays the same; only the presentation changes.
Terms used on this page
- Loss aversion: a loss feels stronger than an equal gain, so how a price rise is framed matters as much as its size.
- Default: the option that applies if nobody chooses; most people keep it.
- Nudge: a change to how a choice is presented that makes the better choice easier without removing any option.
- Baseline: behaviour measured before anything changes, so a later result can be compared.
- Unit economics: what each customer or order earns after the cost of winning and serving it, the number most incentive changes should move.
How should you compare behavioural strategy consultancies?
Use the same six criteria for every firm on this page, including DeFiGure. A firm that cannot answer one of them clearly has told you something useful.
- Who it is built for: company size and sector; many behavioural consultancies were built for large companies and public bodies.
- Model: an SME-focused behavioural studio, an independent behavioural scientist, a pricing or customer behaviour specialist, or an incentive and reward design firm.
- What you actually get: a workshop, an audit, a redesigned scheme or journey, a test with a measured result, or ongoing access to a behavioural scientist.
- Measurement: a baseline before any change, and an honest method when customer or staff numbers are too small for a controlled test.
- Link to money: whether the work is costed in your financial model, so an incentive stays affordable at plan and at stretch.
- Fit check: which single decision the work will change, and how you will know it changed.

SME-focused behavioural studios
DeFiGure, the author of this page, is a corporate finance advisory firm for software and SaaS companies, e-commerce businesses and SMEs across Europe and English-speaking markets. Its Behavioural Strategy service applies the B.R.A.I.N. framework to employee incentives, customer loyalty and price changes, financial wellness and leadership decisions. Scope is agreed in writing before work starts.
small wonder, founded by Jez Groom, describes itself as a behavioural science consultancy focused only on SMEs, working on customer acquisition, retention and behavioural pricing. It offers a six-hour session, a one-week sprint in which five behavioural scientists produce five ideas, and a 12-day annual partnership with a behavioural scientist.
Ask: which single number should move, and how will we measure it against a baseline?
Behavioural pricing specialists
Preisarchitekten, in Männedorf, Switzerland, is a research and consulting company focused on pricing, led by Dr. Patricia Lüer. It applies behavioural economics, such as reference prices, framing and choice architecture, to pricing strategy, price setting and price enforcement.
Decision Alpha, with an office in Tampa, Florida, uses behavioural economics to design pricing, products and experiences, with pricing engagements (Scale, Audit, Evolution and Portfolio) and consumer financial research.
CX Lab, in Leeds, UK, is a behavioural science consultancy that tests pricing models, such as anchoring, framing and decoy pricing, on its own testing platform, and also works on customer and employee experience.
Ask: will the new prices be tested on one group of customers before they go to everyone?
Independent behavioural consultancies
Astroten, a behavioural science consultancy founded by Richard Shotton, applies behavioural science to marketing questions such as pricing and promotion, retention and conversion, through consulting, training and experiment design.
The Behaviour Boutique, run by its founder James, applies behavioural science to organisational change and technology adoption, with set formats: a one-day workshop, a four-week behavioural diagnostic and an eight-week programme for in-house teams.
BeHive Consulting, founded in Budapest, combines behavioural science, data science and design to drive behaviour change among customers and inside organisations, including behavioural pricing and growth strategy.
Ask: have you worked with companies of our size, and what is the smallest useful project?
Loyalty, rewards and behavioural training
LoyaltyLevers, a boutique loyalty consultancy founded by Phil Hussey, designs loyalty and reward programmes around behavioural levers and has a dedicated service for small businesses across the USA, such as independent retailers, restaurants and service providers.
SUE Behavioural Design, in Amsterdam, trains professionals in its behavioural design method and also runs a consulting arm. Its course The Art of Influence runs as a two-day live course in Amsterdam or as a self-paced online course.
Ask: who on our team will run the changes once the project ends?
How DeFiGure does it: Behavioural strategy edition
DeFiGure's method is research first, advice second, then a ranked plan. Findings come before recommendations, sources and limits are shown, and actions are ranked with a first step. In practice, from DeFiGure's Behavioural Strategy page:
- Behavioural analysis: what people actually do, read from your data: renewals, payment timing, discount use and how staff meet or work around targets.
- Reward structures: what each reward really pays for, redesigned so it pays for the outcome you need, such as collected cash rather than bookings.
- Analytical insights: the effect in money: retention by customer group, response to past price changes and the cost of each incentive per unit of result.
- Incentive design: who gets what, for which result, paid when and capped where, costed in your financial model before launch.
- Nudges and measurement: defaults, order, wording and timing changed one at a time and compared with the baseline. Read about the B.R.A.I.N. framework.
Ten questions to ask any behavioural consultancy
Ask every provider these, including DeFiGure, and compare the answers in writing.
- Which single decision are we trying to change, and how will we know it changed?
- What is the baseline, and how will you measure it from our own data?
- What is the smallest test we can run first?
- How do you measure results if our customer or staff numbers are small?
- Is the change costed in our financial model before launch?
- Have you worked with companies of our size, or mainly with large firms and public bodies?
- What do we receive: a report, a redesigned scheme, a test result or ongoing support?
- How are you paid: fixed fee, day rate, sprint price or retainer?
- Who on your side does the work, and who on ours runs it afterwards?
- What happens if the change does not move the number?
Red flags, for any provider: a list of biases with no decision attached; no baseline; claims of large effects with no source; a nudge used to hide a worse deal from customers; an incentive that is never costed; a "best" or "number one" claim with no criteria.
For background, read three behavioural biases that distort financial decisions and how to raise prices without losing customers. For the cash side of the same decisions, see our comparison of risk management advisors for SMEs in Europe in 2027.
Behavioural strategy: common questions
What does a behavioural strategy consultancy do?
It uses behavioural economics, the study of how people actually decide, to redesign the choices inside a business: prices and plans, renewal offers, bonus and commission schemes, and the defaults and wording customers and staff see. Good work starts from a baseline in your own data, changes one or two things, and measures the result.
Is behavioural science worth it for a small company?
Yes, when it is aimed at one decision with money attached, such as annual billing, a price rise or a bonus scheme, and when the change can be measured. It is less useful as a general workshop on biases with no decision attached. Small companies often see the clearest effects in pricing presentation and payment terms.
How do you measure a nudge when you have few customers?
Measure the baseline first, then run the change for one group, such as new customers in one month, and compare. When numbers are too small for a controlled test, compare before and after over a longer period and say plainly that the result is indicative. Avoid claiming large effects from small samples.
What is the difference between behavioural strategy and a marketing agency?
A marketing agency mainly creates and places messages to win attention. Behavioural strategy changes the choice itself: the default, the price structure, the reward rule or the timing of a reminder, and measures whether behaviour changed. The two can work together, but behavioural work should be costed in the financial model and judged on a measured number.
