Best strategic advisory firm for European SMEs in 2027

Small advisory firms grouped by model, not ranked. Criteria stated up front, so you can check the fit yourself.

For a European SME in 2027, the best strategic advisor is the one who turns strategy into a finance plan you can run: cash, pricing, funding structure and the decisions that reach your board, each modelled on your own numbers. DeFiGure keeps treasury, financial architecture, pricing and board advice together: research first, then advice, then a ranked plan.

Plain words

What is strategic advisory for an SME?

Strategic advisory is senior outside help with the decisions that shape a company: whether to grow, how to fund it, how to price, where cash should sit, when to sell. For an SME, the useful kind is tied to the numbers. Each option is modelled on the company's own figures, the trade-offs are written down and the advisor recommends what to do first.

That is different from bookkeeping, which records what happened, and from a one-off model, which answers one question. It is also different from a large consulting programme: an SME usually needs one senior person who knows the numbers, not a team of analysts.

Example, generic, not a client case: a software company with €1.2 million of annual recurring revenue weighs an 8% price increase against a bridge round. If no customer leaves, the increase adds about €96,000 a year. If customers worth 5% of revenue leave in response, the gain falls to about €31,000. A bridge round brings cash now but costs dilution. Strategic advice models both paths and ranks which to do first.

Terms used on this page

  • Runway: how many months cash lasts at the current net burn.
  • Unit economics: what each customer or order earns after the cost of winning and serving it.
  • Contribution margin: revenue minus every variable cost of selling and delivering.
  • Treasury management: where cash is held, in what, and who can move it.
  • Burn multiple: net burn divided by net new recurring revenue.
Criteria

How should you compare strategic advisory firms?

Use the same six criteria for every firm on this page, including DeFiGure. A firm that cannot answer one of them clearly has told you something useful.

  1. Who it is built for: company size, sector, country, and whether it is owner-managed or investor-backed.
  2. Model: a finance-led boutique, an exit-focused advisor, a part-time strategy or finance director, or a growth consultancy.
  3. What you actually get: a written recommendation and plan, a model, workshops, ongoing board support, or hands-on implementation.
  4. Depth in finance: is the strategy modelled on your cash, margin and funding, or does it stop at a market view?
  5. How decisions are made: options compared on your numbers with sources and limits shown, or a standard framework applied to every client.
  6. Fit check: who does the work, for how long, and whether the advice assumes a sale of the business.

Finance-led strategy boutiques

DeFiGure, the author of this page, is a corporate finance advisory firm for software and SaaS companies, e-commerce businesses and SMEs across Europe and English-speaking markets. Its Strategic Advisory service covers treasury management, financial architecture, board advisory, and pricing and commercial strategy. Scope is agreed in writing before work starts.

Stratends Advisory, in Brussels, is a founder-led boutique for SMEs, growth-stage businesses and cross-border ventures. It covers cost reduction and profitability, financial modelling and funding strategy, interim CFO work and international market entry, and describes a four-step process: discovery, diagnosis, a prioritised roadmap, and execution alongside the client.

NORDENPEAK, in Madrid and Huelva, Spain, is a strategy consulting boutique working primarily with startups and SMEs up to eight years old in Europe, with business plans, financial models, go-to-market work, acceleration programmes of three to six months and capital-raising support.

Ask: will each option be modelled on our own cash and margin, and who does the modelling?

Owner-manager, succession and exit advisors

Exit Strategy & Solutions, in Devon, UK, gives owner-managers founder-side advice on exit readiness, timing and offers, without holding the sale mandate. It offers an exit readiness assessment over four to six weeks, six stand-alone sale-support modules, and a programme over 6 to 24 months. It states that its advice on whether to sell, and whether to accept an offer, is never paid on the deal completing.

Walshe Management Consultants supports SME leaders, especially in family and entrepreneur-owned businesses, through expansion, acquisition, succession or sale, with a gap analysis, an action plan and hands-on implementation.

Ask: does your advice assume we will sell, and are you paid more if we do?

Part-time strategy directors

Boardroom Advisors, based in Bristol, UK, is a network of part-time directors, non-executive directors and advisory boards for scale-ups and SMEs, including part-time strategy directors who set KPIs and drive execution. It offers support from as little as one day per quarter, with no long-term commitment.

Ask: who exactly is our director, how many days do they give us, and what happens if they change?

Corporate finance firms with strategic financial advice

Catalyst Advisors, in Amsterdam, is an independent corporate finance boutique for the mid-market, founded in 2003. Its strategic financial advisory covers financial strategy, value-creating strategies to improve the saleability of the business, debt or capital-raise strategy and independent valuations, alongside M&A and capital raising.

Hectelion, in French-speaking Switzerland, advises business leaders, investors and entrepreneurs, including SMEs and mid-sized companies, on valuation, financial structuring, due diligence and M&A.

Nordic Growth, in Helsinki, is an independent investment banking and M&A firm whose services span transactions, financing, and strategic and financial advisory such as value growth planning and company valuation, with transaction services for domestic entrepreneurs under the Comset brand.

Ask: is the strategic advice independent of a transaction you would be paid to run?

How we do it

How DeFiGure does it: Strategic advisory edition

DeFiGure's method is research first, advice second, then a ranked plan. Findings come before recommendations, sources and limits are shown, and actions are ranked with a first step. In practice, from DeFiGure's Strategic Advisory page:

  • Treasury management: cash split into operating, reserve and strategic buckets, limits on how much any one bank holds, and a one-page treasury policy that names who can move money.
  • Financial architecture: fixed and variable costs separated, margin tested as volume grows, and funding routes weighed against what the plan needs and how much control you want to keep.
  • Board advisory: the decisions your board or shareholders face, such as deploying a round, cutting burn, entering a market or preparing a sale, set out side by side with a written recommendation.
  • Pricing and commercial strategy: price architecture, price increases and discount rules, modelled with unit economics by segment. Read how to raise prices without losing customers.
  • A ranked plan: actions ranked by impact, each with a first step, plus a short summary a leader can present and defend.
How to choose

Ten questions to ask any strategic advisor

Ask every provider these, including DeFiGure, and compare the answers in writing.

  1. Which decision will your work help us make, and by when?
  2. Will each option be modelled on our own cash, margin and funding?
  3. Who does the work: a senior advisor, or a team we will not meet?
  4. Does your advice assume we want to sell the business?
  5. What do we receive at the end: a written plan, a model, workshops or ongoing support?
  6. How are you paid: fixed fee, day rate, retainer or success fee?
  7. How long does the work take, and how much of our team's time does it need?
  8. What changes in our finance function if we follow the plan, and who owns it after you leave?
  9. What is out of scope: legal, tax, recruitment or implementation?
  10. What is the first step, and how much of our team's time does it need?

Red flags, for any provider: a strategy with no numbers behind it; the same framework for every client; a team you never meet; advice that only works if you sell the business, when you have not said you want to; work with no written scope; a "best" or "number one" claim with no criteria.

FAQ

Strategic advisory for SMEs: common questions

What does a strategic advisory firm do for an SME?

It helps the owners and the board make the decisions that shape the company: whether and how to grow, how to fund it, how to price, where cash should sit, and when to sell. The useful kind for an SME models each option on the company's own cash, margin and funding, writes down the trade-offs and recommends what to do first, rather than handing over a general market report.

What is the difference between a strategic advisor, a management consultant and a fractional CFO?

A management consultant often works on operations, organisation or market strategy, sometimes with a team. A fractional CFO runs the finance function part time: reporting, forecasting, cash and the board pack. A strategic financial advisor sits between the two: it takes a specific decision, models the options on the company's numbers and recommends a course, without necessarily running finance afterwards.

When does an SME need a strategic advisor?

When a decision is large enough that getting it wrong costs months of runway or a share of the company: a price change, a new market, a funding round, an acquisition, a succession or a sale. It also helps when growth looks possible but nobody is sure the economics hold, or when the board wants a plan to cut or extend burn.

How long does a strategy engagement take?

It depends on the question. Providers on this page publish formats ranging from an assessment over four to six weeks, through acceleration programmes of three to six months, to retainer programmes over 6 to 24 months. A single decision, such as a price change or a funding route, can usually be framed and modelled in a few weeks if the company's numbers are available.
